The web browser is your primary path to the world of the Internet. Not surprisingly, of all web applications, it is web browsers that are most vulnerable. They collect a lot of information about you, such as passwords, geolocation, and more.
The Atlas VPN team recently conducted a survey and found that Google Chrome, the most popular browser in the world, also had the highest number of reported vulnerabilities. Right now alone, there are reports of 303 vulnerabilities. The total number of vulnerabilities since the browser’s introduction is now 3,159.
These figures are taken from the VulDB vulnerability database. Their research indicates the total number of documented vulnerabilities but does not indicate their severity. So I would say that the data is not entirely representative.
Recent Google Chrome vulnerabilities include CVE-2022-3318, CVE-2022-3314, CVE-2022-3311, CVE-2022-3309, and CVE-2022-3307. All the vulnerabilities can cause memory corruption, but they were fixed in update 106.0.5249.61.
This large number of vulnerabilities is most likely due to the fact that many Internet users use Google Chrome. That is why hackers are primarily interested in targeting this particular browser. Consequently, a large number of vulnerabilities are detected.
In the second position is Mozilla Firefox, with 117 vulnerabilities this year. In third place is Microsoft Edge, with 103 vulnerabilities detected since the beginning of the year, 61% more than in 2021. Since its release, 806 vulnerabilities have been found in Microsoft Edge, so it hasn’t been an excellent year for Edge.
They are followed by the Safari browser, with 26 documented vulnerabilities for the first three quarters of 2022. Safari’s total number of vulnerabilities is 1,139. Safari also recently surpassed 1 billion users, making it the second most popular browser in the world.
The most secure browser, according to Atlas VPN statistics, is Opera. This year, Opera hasn’t yet to find even a single vulnerability. And the total number of exposures for all time is only 344 accumulated vulnerabilities. It is worth noting that Opera is the least popular of all the browsers on this list.
I would also like to remind you that Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Opera have different features based on the Chromium engine. This means potential vulnerabilities in Chromium can affect any of these browsers.
