A few days ago, Garmin, which specializes in the production of gadgets for travelers and extreme athletes announced a new device line InReach. The company is going to release a device Garmin InReach Messenger and a companion app Garmin Messenger.
InReach devices are needed so that those who often travel to places where there is no cellular coverage could communicate with the outside world via satellite communication. These devices are needed to communicate with friends and emergency officials.
This gadget costs $300, it has a small display and can work as a standalone device and paired with a smartphone. It is needed so that you can send messages via satellite communication. This includes the ability to send a direct SOS message to the Garmin International Emergency Response Coordination Center.
When paired with your smartphone, the device will automatically determine the best way to send a message via cellular, Wi-Fi, or satellite. You will also be able to use Messenger. You can send or receive messages with individual contacts or in group messages.
The company says the InReach Messenger runs on battery power for 28 days and is IPX7 rated for immersion in water to a depth of 1 meter. The device measures 3.1 by 2.5 inches and weighs 4 ounces. The device can also serve as a backup battery if your smartphone runs out of power.
In order to send messages, you will need to register in the Garmin Messenger app, as well as your recipient. There is no fee to use the Messenger app itself.
Some have noted that this is a kind of response to Apple adding the ability to send emergency SOS signals via satellite to their iPhone 14. However, that’s not entirely true.
The fact is that even though Apple’s statement made the possibility of using satellite communication a hot topic, the InReach device is a much more ultimate solution than buying an iPhone for travelers. First of all, because of the battery life and the company has much more experience in this area and will probably give users more options than Apple.
However, you should also understand that Garmin requires a monthly fee that starts at $15 to use its gadget. Also, the disadvantage is that you need to carry around an extra gadget that takes up space, though it is small.
