Setting up audio is quite simple, but you need a few things to understand how to get the best sound. Including, you must understand which HDMI Input Audio Format to choose in order to get the best results.

As I said before, there is nothing complicated, and this guide will help you choose the right input format.

The default setting is usually PCM and in most cases you should use this setting. However, there are some cases where Bitstream will be better.

What is PCM HDMI Input Audio Format explained

First, let’s get a handle on PCM, since it is the default HDMI Input Audio Format. So, PCM is an abbreviation for Pulse-code modulation.

Originally this term was used during the analogue era and at first it meant the conversion of analogue audio into a digital format in telephony. As television evolved it began to be used in TVs that had digital processors.

Now, PCM has changed a bit (because there is no analog audio in modern televisions). Now PCM HDMI Input Audio Format means the audio processor will be used and the sound will be converted to 2.0 (two speakers) or 2.1 (two speakers + subwoofer). Regardless of whether you install external speakers or use the TV’s built-in speakers.

However, what if you use a more advanced audio-system? In that case, PCM is not what you need, because even multi-channel audio will be converted to 2.0 or 2.1 format.

So if you are using a high-end audio system, you need to use Bitstream.

What is Bitstream HDMI Input Audio Format explained

Bitstream is a more sophisticated audio format that should be used if you are using a high-end audio system. In that case, the audio must be the audio processor of the external speaker system, so the audio processor of the TV is not involved in this process.

If you are using a high-end sound bar or an external 7.1 or 5.1 speaker, you should use Bitstream to get the best sound quality.

In case you are not using high-end audio devices, you should use PCM.

How to change audio input format on your TV

Here’s everything is quite simple. Here’s what you should do:

  • Open Settings

  • Go to Expert Settings
