This week, Tesla launched a new service in Texas that will open up opportunities for people. That is this retail electricity provider service that allows some local residents with Powerwall home backup batteries to sell excess energy back to the grid.

It will work so that people in order to participate need to live in neighborhoods with retail grid choice – Tesla’s website mentions the Dallas and Houston areas. But to do that now, you have to wait for an invitation to connect through the Tesla app.

In the future, those who can join will be part of a system that can sell energy from the owners’ power grid to the grid and vice versa. Also, when using energy from the grid, Tesla compensates for renewable energy sources.

The company is doing a lot and is committed to building virtual power plants. Before that, they started many projects, such as a 250-megawatt power plant in Australia, built in 2018, a power plant in Japan, and others.

The state’s power grid operator this summer asked the public to conserve electricity. In turn, Tesla has asked Tesla owners in the state to avoid charging during peak hours. This fall in October, the ERCOT board unanimously approved a pilot project that allowed Tesla to continue its VPP program. So we should expect an active pace of development of the new service.
