The new AMD Radeon RX 7900 graphics cards were liked by many in terms of price/performance ratio. Plus, they have standard PCI-E Power connectors. However, they couldn’t avoid some problems. Partly they were fixed in the latest version of the video driver, but there are more serious flaws.
Collecting data from several reviews and user reviews from forums, the German technical resource HardwareLuxx found that the GPU temperatures are quite different. They are generally satisfactory, but there is a local overheating problem.
For example, on average, it’s OK when the GPU is 80 degrees and in Hot Spot — under 100 degrees. In turn, some Radeon RX 7900 have an average temperature of 60-75 degrees, and in Hot Spot, it’s 110. It would be higher, but protective algorithms limit further heating. As a matter of fact, at this moment, throttling is activated, and frequencies drop.
It is not clear what is the root of the problem yet. Currently, only reference versions are available for purchase, and the build is supposed to be of poor quality. It is supposed that the cooler’s base isn’t flat enough or there is not enough thermal paste. Nevertheless, it is unlikely to be related to hardware problems of the GPU.
AMD said they are already investigating the problem.
