Not so long ago, in April, Apple launched a program for self-repair of their devices for users. The company is gradually releasing instructions on how to replace one or another element of your Apple device using official Apple parts.

At first, this program worked only for iPhones, but Apple is gradually expanding the list of devices you can repair right at home. As early as tomorrow (Tuesday, August 23), a MacBook with the M1 processor will be available for do-it-yourself repair.

Which Macbooks can be repaired using The Self Service Repair

MacBook repair kits for the M1 processor will be available as early as Tuesday. That means you’ll be able to fix the 2020 MacBook Air M1 and 13-inch MacBook Pro, as well as the 14-inch MacBook Pro and 16-inch MBP 2021. The list of parts you can replace includes:

  • Audio subsystem.
  • Battery.
  • Display.
  • Logic board.
  • Upper and lower chassis.
  • Antennas.
  • Keypads (plus Touch ID board) and more.

This list is not definitive. In total, the company says you’ll be able to replace about 15 components of your MacBook. On top of that, you’ll also be able to rent a MacBook tools kit for $49 a week. So you won’t have to buy new tools to fix it. Also, you can not fix your MacBook yourself, as many service centers can do it for you using official repair kits.

For which other devices Self Service Repair will be available

Soon the company plans to release repair kits for Macs and iPads. The main problem with this idea is that Apple has no plans to release repair kits for older models of their devices. Even though those are the models that need repairing the most.

This program was launched against the backdrop of the fact that in the U.S. they consider it unacceptable restrictions on repairing devices by developers. The user should not be limited in the replacement of components and after replacing them there should be no problems with the loss of warranty or locking of the device.

Many users expect in the future that the company will make it easier to replace parts and make it possible to change the memory or drives without having to replace the logic board.
