Blizzard is stopping releasing content updates for Heroes of the Storm. On Friday, July 8, a brief post appeared on Blizzard’s blog page, in which the studio said that it doesn’t plan to support MOBA as before.
Now all updates will be released “as needed”, fixing bugs and some balance issues, just like they do to the Starcraft II. The in-game store will continue to be available, but it will no longer offer new content.
“To our Heroes community, we say, “thank you”,” Blizzard said, noting it will gift “the incredibly rare Epic Arcane Lizard mount to all players” with the game’s next patch. “You continue to be one of our most passionate communities, we’re grateful for your continued dedication and support, and as always, we look forward to seeing you in the Nexus.”
This announcement rounds out Blizzard’s MOBA universe. In 2018, former studio president J. Allen Brack said that the studio had made the “difficult” decision to reduce the number of employees working on HOTS and transfer them to work on other studio projects. Since then, the release of new content has slowed down.
The last new hero was released almost two years ago. In addition, Blizzard’s abrupt decision to stop supporting the Heroes of the Storm competitive scene also provoked a bad reaction from many professionals to the company.
