Avatar: The Way of the Water appeared on the world’s big screens on December 16. The movie earned $53 million in the national market in the first days. It is less than the sequels of Doctor Strange and Black Panther. In turn, the Walt Disney Co. has revised its predictions for the earnings of the James Cameron movie.

The company believes that the earnings for the first weekend (December 16-18) in the U.S. and Canada will range from $130 to $150 million. Earlier, Disney predicted that they would exceed $150 million. This is more than double the earnings of the first Avatar, released in 2009 – in the first weekend, they were $ 77 million in the domestic market, said Axios.

Cameron told GQ that the Avatar sequel is so expensive that the film would have “to be the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history” to break even. The director also said that the future of his franchise would depend on how The Way of the Water performs.

When it comes to audience ratings, they like the movie. The Way of the Water has received 77% from critics and 93% from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.
