On July 14, Samsung Electronics, a leader in advanced memory technology, announced the release and sale of the industry’s first 16-gigabit (GB) dual data rate 6 (GDDR6) DRAM memory with 24 gigabits per second (Gbps) processing speed. This memory was created using third-generation (1z)1 10-nanometer process technology and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) technology.

It is expected to enhance the performance of next-generation graphics cards, laptops and game consoles. It is expected that this memory will be used in premium devices. It can also be used for AI-based applications and HPC systems (high-performance computing).

The explosion of data caused by artificial intelligence and the metaworld is pushing the need to expand graphics capabilities that can simultaneously process vast amounts of data at extremely high speeds,” said Daniel Lee, executive vice president of the memory product planning group at Samsung Electronics. “With our industry-first 24Gbps GDDR6 already on the market, we look forward to testing graphics memory DRAM on next-generation GPU platforms so we can bring it to market in time to meet the onslaught of new demand.

Thanks to the advanced insulating material (High-K Metal Gate; HKMG), manufacturers have been able to achieve minimal current leakage. Samsung’s 24Gb/s GDDR6 is 30% faster than their previous 18Gb/s product. So after integrating it into a premium graphics card, Samsung said the memory can process and transfer up to 1.1 terabytes (TB) of data, or roughly 275 Full HD movies, in just one second.

This memory is developed in accordance with JEDEC specifications. That means it will be compatible with all GPU designs. This will make it as accessible as possible and widely introduce it to the market.

What else has Samsung announced

In addition to impressive specifications, Samsung’s new GDDR6 lineup will feature low power consumption. This will be especially useful when used in laptops, which will blitz the battery life. It will also save the device’s battery and make it last longer.

Using Dynamic Voltage Switching (DVS) technology, which adjusts the operating voltage depending on performance requirements, Samsung is offering 20G and 16G versions with about 20 percent higher power efficiency at 1.1V compared to the industry-standard GDDR6 1.35V.

The company also says that this memory can be used not only in PCs or laptops but also in gaming consoles, and graphics-intensive applications such as high-performance computing, autonomous driving, and electric cars. Another option for use is 4K and 8K video playback, as well as support for demanding artificial intelligence gas pedal workloads.

Customer validation and first shipments of the new memory Samsung plans to begin this month. Most likely the start date of shipments will coincide with the release date of the new 4000 series of Nvidia graphics cards.
