Much of the information in today’s world is digitized. You can find anything in digital format: old books, songs, videos, photos, and so on. Sometimes people have so many files on their computers that they just don’t have enough space. They are hard to keep track of. There are programs and files you need every day, but sometimes you also need them for a specific event or just for something you use very rarely. This is what Zip format is for. It is designed to compress multiple files in one place. As a result, they take up less space and are easy to move between folders or even to other devices. Later you just have to unzip the file to know the actual contents present in it.

What is CPGZ

The CPGZ file is found on Mac. Mac users often realize when trying to unzip a file that it has somehow been converted to CPGZ format. When the Archive utility is launched, the CPGZ file again turned back to a zip file.

Why Zip File Converts into GPGZ

There can be several reasons for this. The main reasons for this problem are :

  • Incomplete file download
  • You downloaded a corrupted file
  • Error or bug
  • Improper way of downloading by certain web browsers

How to fix it

There are several ways you can restore your file to its normal state. For this method, you also need to make sure you have downloaded the entire zip file. Follow the methods mentioned below that will help you to unzip the CPGZ file on your Mac.

Unzip CPGZ file with Command line

One of the easiest ways to bypass this error and unzip your file is to use the command line. You can break the loop and unzip the CPGZ file in order to open it. For this you need to :

  • Go to Applications
  • then select Utilities
  • Open Terminal
  • Find your .zip file in your search engine
  • Now type the ‘unzip’ command and keep a distance of space. And drag and drop the .zip file into the terminal and press return.
  • Now you can see what’s inside the file

Download the zip file again using another web browser

Sometimes a file you have downloaded may be partially downloaded or corrupted for various reasons. In that case, it should help to download the file using a different browser. If even in this case it failed to download correctly, then assume that the file is corrupted, something went wrong, or you can check md5/sha1 sums.

Open it using The Unarchiver

You can also use a very good third-party application. It is similar to the Archive Utility which is already preinstalled on the Mac. This application should open the CPGZ quite easily. In order to use it you will need :

  • Download and install The Unarchiver
  • Find the file you need
  • On the top right corner of your screen
  • On the access menu and click on Get Info
  • Select Open with and then click on Unarchive
  • The file will be opened in the application and you can unarchive it
