If you’re the lucky owner of a new PlayStation 5 console and want to know how to turn it off, you’ve come to the right place. One of the first things you need to know when you get your PS5 is how to turn it off properly. Now that the new generation of gaming consoles are using the new rest mode, it can be confusing how to turn off this console.

It’s no secret that if you turn off any device incorrectly, it will soon break down. PlayStation5 is no exception. Unfortunately, not all owners of the new generation consoles have figured out how to properly turn off their units. Well, let’s take a closer look at how to turn off your PS5.

What’s better: a complete shutdown of the PS5 or a rest mode?

To begin with, it’s worth noting that a complete shutdown of the Playstation 5 console is only one of its shutdown options, which are used quite rarely, for example, when you’re going to completely unplug the power from the socket. In most situations, however, the console simply goes into a low-power rest mode, sort of like a PC’s hibernation mode, from which it’s much quicker to turn on afterward.

In sleep mode, depending on the system settings, the PS5 can charge your controllers which you can also turn off, download game and program updates, and install the games you bought in the PlayStation Store from your smartphone or PC. When you go into rest mode, the console’s backlight turns orange.

In rest mode, your PS5 is still on and running, so don’t unplug the console’s power cord until it’s completely turned off. When the PS5 is completely powered off, it consumes no power, and only then can you unplug it without worrying about the console’s data and electronics.

The PlayStation 5 user interface differs from previous generations of consoles in that the power settings don’t have their separate icon on the home screen. The power settings are now hidden in the Control Center, which you can only find with the controller. Moreover, you can also use the PS4 controller with your PS5.

So, if you want to turn off the PS5 using a controller, you have to follow these steps:

  • Open the PS5 Control Center menu by pressing the PlayStation logo on the controller.
  • Select the “Power” icon, press on it and you will see three options, including “Enter Rest Mode” (standby mode), “Turn off PS5”, and “Restart PS5”.
  • Finally, choose “Turn off PS5”.

If you turn off the PS5 in this manner, the console will begin to shut down, but not instantly. You will see the message “Preparing to shut down PS5…” warning you not to unplug the power cord while the PS5 power LED is flashing.

Turning off the PlayStation 5 will close all running games and applications, so be sure to save your progress before doing so. When the PS5 shuts down, the lights on the console will blink for a while and then turn off completely. Now you can safely unplug the console and unplug the cable from the power outlet.

How to turn off the PS5 using a power button

If you wish, you can also turn off the PlayStation 5 using the button on the front of the console. To do this, look for the Power button, which is the black button at the bottom of the glossy black console panel. If you have the standard version of the PlayStation 5, the Power button is below the Eject button. On the digital edition of the console, this is the only button.

Press and hold the button until you hear two consecutive beeps indicating that the console is shutting down. If you simply press the button and immediately release your finger, the PlayStation 5 will go into sleep mode instead of shutting down completely. Furthermore, if you suddenly enter a safe mode on your PS5, you can easily get out of it.

How to turn off the PS5 using the app

If you want to turn off your PS5 using the app, you have to install the PlayStation app on your mobile device and connect it to the console. To do this, you have to enable remote play on the PS5:

  • Navigate to “Settings”.
  • Select and open the “System” menu and go to “Remote Play”.
  • After that, turn on the “Enable Remote Play” button.

Once you connect the PS5 from your mobile device, you have to follow these steps:

  • Set the PS5 in standby mode.
  • Launch the Remote Play app on your phone and sign in with your PS5 account.
  • Make sure your PS5 and mobile device are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
  • It’s not recommended to unplug the PS5 while the power is on. First, you may lose your game progress. Second, if a download or update is in progress, you may lose that data as well.

Keep in mind that your console is still on in standby mode and allows the device to use some of its power. The safest way to turn off your PS5 is to turn it off completely first. You have also to be aware that you can use Discord on your PS5 to play with friends online.

What happens if you turn off the PS5 incorrectly?

The most basic thing that can happen is a complete or partial deletion of data. This is even written about when the console is turned off. It’s also not uncommon for users who have turned off the PlayStation incorrectly to complain that their power supply has stopped working.

In addition to this, USB ports and other connectors can “fly”. In the worst case, if the console was turned off incorrectly, the system could be damaged. This will mean that the PlayStation is finished and you need to buy a new one. To avoid the scenarios described above, it’s recommended to treat your console with care and turn it off correctly.
