In December 2022, Microsoft found that on some PCs, the cumulative update KB5021233 caused BSoD with error 0xc000021a after installation (there was a critical failure during the installation of new updates or installation of inappropriate system files). The list of vulnerable platforms after installing KB5021233 included only client versions of Windows 10, starting with Windows 10 20H2 and ending with the latest version of Windows 10 22H2.
The developers recommended copying the hidparse.sys file from the system32\drivers folder to the system32 folder using the “Windows Repair Environment” (WinRE) option as a temporary solution. “It is not recommended to use any other workaround than the one recommended with WinRE. We do not recommend deleting the hidparse.sys file from the Windows\System32 folder,” Microsoft added.
Microsoft didn’t provide any information about the Windows 11 builds that were affected by a similar problem, but the developers released a cumulative update, KB5022287, for Windows 11 21H2. The update description states that it includes a patch against a similar bug.
