Choosing a TV is an important step, because usually Samsung Neo QLED TVs are quite expensive and people buy them not for one year, but at least for 2-3 years.
So before making a choice which model to buy, you need to weigh the pros and cons to buy the TV, which will be the best choice in terms of value for money.
What are the differences between QN85A and QN90A?
The main difference is the series to which belongs QN85A and QN90A.
QN85A is a TV series 8 and QN90A is a series 9. To be honest, there is not much difference between these two series, so it does not mean that QN90A is the best choice.
However, in order to make an intelligent decision, we need to look a little deeper.
Both TVs have 4K resolution with a 120 Hz refresh rate. So it’s pretty obvious from that point of view. Also, the TVs have the same remote controls (TM2180E) and both come with Tizen OS 6.0.
The only major difference is the Dimming technology and display type.
What is the difference between QN85A and QN90A display types?
QN85A has the following display diagonals: 55, 65, 75 and 85 inches.
The QN90A also has 55, 65, 75 and 85 inches screens configurations.
However, there is one significant difference – QN85A has ADS IPS display, while QN90A has VA matrix.
ADS IPS displays have many advantages, including very good viewing angles. However, it is not all rosy, as the ADS IPS display has one significant disadvantage – insufficiently deep black color. Black on IPS displays looks more like dark gray than deep black and this can reduce your viewing pleasure.
VA displays (such as those used in the QN90A and the 85″ QN85A) have smaller viewing angles, so that may be a slight drawback. But my personal opinion is that the more saturated black in the QN90A justifies it.
Also, another difference is the dimming technology: QN85A has Supreme UHD Dimmin and QN90A has Ultimate UHD dimming, which makes black even richer (especially if you take into account VA display).

Officially prices are as follows.
Samsung Neo QLED QN85A prices
- 55 inch – $1,599
- 65 inch – $2,199
- 75 inch – $2,999
- 85 inch – $4,499
Samsung Neo QLED QN90A prices
- 55 inch – $1,799
- 65 inch – $2,599
- 75 inch – $3,499
- 85 inch – $4,999
That are official prices, announced by Samsung. Some stores may have a discount (for example Best Buy has a $200 offer now, as for June 10, 2021).
As you can see, the difference between the prices of the Samsung QN85A and QN90A is $200 for the 55-inch and up to $500 for the 75 and 85-inch models.
My opinion is simple enough – if that $200 to $500 doesn’t hit your savings very hard, the Samsung QN90A is a much bigger choice, at least because you get deeper blacks.
However, if you do want to save money, the QN85A would be a more preferable choice because it offers the same basic features (including processor, expansion and refresh rate) and the only difference is the display type.
Well, if you want to buy an 85″ model, the Samsung QN85A looks like the only sensible choice, as you’ll just save $500 and get pretty much the same thing.
