What to do before leaving your work

If you have decided that you need to leave your current job, you should take care of a few things so that you do not find yourself without a job and without prospects. First of all, you should think about whether you are really unhappy with your job.

If you decide that you don’t see any prospects in your current job, think about the future. Before you leave your job, it is important to have a plan for what to do next. You should also take care of your safety and your rights as an employee. Also, don’t forget to take your favorite cup from your workplace!

When you should leave your job

Many people who are happy with their jobs or who like their salaries often wonder why some people want to quit similar jobs. But there are several very good reasons for this. First of all, it is worth understanding that everyone is different and two people in the same position may feel very differently.

The first sign in which you should think about quitting your job is constant fatigue. If after a day of work you come home and feel that you do not want anything more and you are in a bad mood, then you should think about whether you do that in life.

If you feel that you stopped growing as a professional, you should think about changing companies or try to talk to your boss about a promotion. The fact is people always develop as professionals and there is nothing wrong with leaving an old job that is no longer relevant to your skills.

If your workplace has a toxic atmosphere, that’s a very good reason to change jobs. When you are not on good terms with your co-workers, your boss constantly pressures you and your customers bring too much negativity, then changing jobs seems like a good way out. The fact is that if you are constantly in a toxic atmosphere, it is likely to be difficult for you to develop and show good results at work. This means that it doesn’t make sense for your career to stay in that place for a long time.

What you should do before you say you’re leaving

If you have already decided that you should leave your job, there are a few things you need to take care of before you make your intentions known to your boss. Otherwise, you run the risk of getting into a bad situation and getting into some more trouble.

Study the contract

You should reread your employment contract again and study all the points about how you can terminate it. It is also a good idea to talk to your lawyer. He or she might be able to spot some non-obvious things there that you are not able to see.

Count your savings

You should also think about what you will live on after you leave your job. You should have savings that will allow you to live for at least a few months since it might take you some time to find another job. Also, after you leave your job you may want to take some time off or go on vacation.

Post your profiles on employers’ websites

I would advise you to post your CV on several job sites right away. It’s a good idea to avoid stretching out your search for a new job for a long time. You can use services like LinkedIn, for example.

What you should take care of during the last days of work

After you have already told your boss about your intention to leave your job, there are still a few things to take care of. You will most likely need to work for a while longer. This usually takes a couple of weeks to a month. During your last days at work, you should take care of some basic things.

Make sure you are logged out of all personal accounts and change passwords

If you were logged into your personal accounts on your work computer or other equipment you should check this and log out of all possible accounts. I would also recommend that you change your passwords to make sure that no one has access to your personal information.

Make sure you stay in touch with your colleagues

It is a good idea to stay in contact with your colleagues. Especially if you were friends with them. It never hurts to have friends in the industry. Also if you have a good relationship with your boss, it is good to keep in touch with them so that your boss can make a good reference for you and maybe you can even cooperate again in the future.

Get your stuff together

You should also look around your workplace and collect all of your personal belongings that you would like to take away.

Go through the Exit Interview

This is a good opportunity to share your opinion of the workplace. That way you can give your real opinion since you have nothing more to lose. This will give your former boss the opportunity to improve the atmosphere and working conditions for the rest of the team. You can also ask for feedback on your work in this interview, which will also be good for your professional development.
