Many fans have been waiting for more details about the upcoming HBO Max series The Last of Us for quite some time. The streaming site finally released the first official teaser for the forthcoming series on Monday. Fans got their first look at the film adaptation of the beloved universe. The release date, however, is still unknown and will be sometime in 2023.
The story is an adaptation of The Last of Us video game for the PS3. It will tell the story of the smuggler Joel, who will be played by the star of the movie “The Mandalorian” Pedro Pascal. According to the storyline, a “zombie” apocalypse happened worldwide. Even at its very beginning, Joel is deprived of his daughter. During another mission, he has to accompany a girl the same age as his dead daughter. She is Ellie and will be played by “Game of Thrones” alumna Bella Ramsey. Together they must travel halfway across the country. With Ellie’s help, a scientist will probably create a vaccine against the “zombie” virus that has destroyed the society we are used to.
The trailer was released on the day of the Last of Us – September 26. This day is what fans call Outbreak Day. According to the plot, on September 26, there was a leak of the cordyceps virus that almost wiped out humanity. The trailer continues along with the song “Alone and Forsaken” by Hank Williams.
The trailer shows us iconic moments from the game. Scenes such as Joel and Ellie escaping from the quarantine zone, the two collapsing skyscrapers they must go through, Ellie riding the carousel with her childhood friend Riley and Joel running with his daughter Sarah at the beginning of the pandemic were shown. We’re also looking at people infected with cordyceps called clickers. They have mushroom-like spores sprouting on their faces that cause them only to make click-like sounds and not see at all.
In addition to Pascal and Ramsey, the cast includes Gabriel Luna as Joel’s brother Tommy; Merle Dandridge as Marlene, leader of the Firefly rebel group; Nico Parker as Joel’s daughter Sarah; Murray Bartlett as Frank; Nick Offerman as Bill; Jeffrey Pierce as Perry; and Anna Torv as Tess. Voice actors Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson, who played Joel and Ellie in the video games, will also appear in the series in undisclosed roles.
