How to fix TV that has only sound but no picture

Televisions are an integral part of our lives. We use them in our free time watching our favorite shows, listening to music, and playing games. Even though television technology has advanced a lot, mishaps can still happen.

For example, there may be a situation where the TV has sound, but no picture. In this case, the screen does not have any cracks or similar damage. Fortunately, in most cases there are simple ways to solve this problem.

The easiest methods of correction

There are three easiest ways to solve the situation, but they can help only in some cases.

  • Try unplugging the TV for an extended period of time, such as overnight. After you plug it back in, chances are that everything will work as it should.
  • Disconnect the TV and any device connected to it, and try to reconnect everything.
  • Check if the cable is connected to the correct port. It should be on the HDMI port, a wrong connection will cause problems.

You’re lucky if these recommendations helped you. If the situation hasn’t changed after following them, then your problem is something else. All other solutions are described below.

Causes of no picture

There can be quite a few reasons for the lack of a picture. The main ones are listed below.

  • Problem with the TV panel. If the TV panel is damaged, the screen will not work properly. This cannot be fixed by yourself. You will either have to buy a new screen or replace the TV itself.
  • The problem is in the backlighting. Some televisions have backlighting. It is used to illuminate the picture on the screen. So if the backlight does not work, the picture on the screen will also not appear.
  • Breakage in the power supply board. This is most often the reason for the lack of a picture on the screen. To see if there is anything wrong with the power locator board, connect it to an independent power source. If the TV then works as it should, then the problem is not with the TV, it’s with the power outlet.
  • Problem with the capacitor. If the TV’s capacitor is out of order, the screen will not display an image.

 Factory Reset

One option to fix the problem is a factory reset. The factory settings are restored differently on different TVs. On some TVs, you can use the remote control or an app to do this. To do this, simply press a specific button. Then the TV will turn off and then turn back on by itself. But some televisions require more complicated manipulation. If you can’t reset the TV with the remote control, you need to do the following:

  1. Take a pin or something like that.
  2. Find a small hole on the back or side of your TV.
  3. Insert the pin into this hole.
  4. Press and hold for about 50-60 seconds.

After resetting, you will need to set up your TV again.

Replacing the HDMI cable

You can also replace the HDMI cable if you have any doubts about it. It may be defective, so the picture is not transmitted. You can check if it is the problem by plugging in another one if you have more. Or just get another one, they are available online and at stores like Walmart.

Replacing the power board

It is possible that the picture problem is related to the power board of the TV. If nothing helps, you should consider replacing it. This can be done by contacting a professional or trying to replace it at home.

Check the TV installation

Check the power to the TV and the installation connections. Make sure everything is set up properly and the cables are connected correctly. Check if the cables are connected to the correct port and then do the following:

  • Turn off and unplug the TV.
  • Switch it back on after 15-30 minutes.
  • Press the power button for a few seconds.
  • Release the button.
  • Turn on TV.

After performing these actions, the picture on the screen may reappear.
