How to turn off the Nintendo Switch

The Nintendo Switch is a video game console which is developed by Nintendo. The release of it was on March 3, 2017. This console is a hybrid, as you can use it as a home console and as a portable device.

The Nintendo Switch consists of a console unit, a dock, and two Joy-Con controllers. Nintendo classifies this device as a home console, that can be taken with you on the go, although, it is a hybrid.

You can buy games for the Nintendo Switch through either retail channels or digitally through the Nintendo eShop. Game cartridges are similar in design to the game cards which were used for Nintendo 3DS games, but those for the Nintendo Switch are smaller and thinner.

In comparison with Wii or Wii U, you get not as much from the Switch. It doesn’t come with a pack-in game. The main Nintendo Switch components are:

  • The console.
  • The left and right Joy-Con controllers.
  • Two wrist straps.
  • One Joy-Con grip.
  • One dock.
  • An HDMI cable.
  • AC adapter.

If the games which you play aren’t online ones, the Nintendo Switch doesn’t have WiFi to let you play. The Internet connection is needed to set up the console and to download games from eShop. If you use cartridges to play games, Internet access is unnecessary.

Take a note that the device has only 32GB of internal storage, so you’ll need to purchase a microSD card to be able to use the opportunities of the device to its limits.

How to turn off the device

There are 2 ways to switch off your console:

Take note that these instructions can be used with both the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Switch Life.

Turning off the console via the physical power button:

  • Take a look at the top of your Nintendo Switch.
  • Find the power button which has a power logo embossed on it and is located on the left-hand side between the left trigger button and the volume controls.
  • Click on the button and hold it until the options to turn the console off fully will appear.

Turning off the console via the console’s software:

  • On your Nintendo Switch, hold in the power button for two seconds.
  • Click down to go to Power Options.
  • Tap Power Off

How to put your Nintendo Switch into Sleep Mode

If you don’t want to switch off the game you have played, because something has interrupted you, the best solution is to put the device into sleep mode. It means that the game you’re currently playing will be paused.

Sleep Mode in a few simple steps:

  • Tap the home button on your console.
  • Then, scroll down to the power icon on the Home menu.
  • After that, click on “Sleep Mode”.
  • Tap “Sleep Mode” a second time.

Your device is now in Sleep Mode. Take note that the device which is put into Sleep Mode will use slightly more battery life than the console which is switched off.
