Meta said it could ban Canadians from sharing news content. This comes as the country proposed Bill C-18, which was introduced by the ruling Liberal government earlier this year. The idea is for platforms like Facebook to enter into revenue-sharing partnerships with local news organizations.

The Meta responded to the bill and said they may be forced to consider whether they will continue to allow news content sharing in Canada. Along with that, the Meta also spoke out on the situation of not being invited by the House of Commons Heritage Committee to a meeting about the legislation earlier in the week.

After the rejection, Meta said they have always approached interactions with Canadian government agencies on this legislation in a spirit of fair and just debate. So were surprised not to receive an invitation to participate, especially given lawmakers’ public comments that the law is against Facebook.

Many believe that the relationship between the Canadian government and the company deteriorated after one situation. When Mark Zuckerberg and former COO Sheryl Sandberg ignored subpoenas from the parliamentary ethics committee in 2019.
