Directive 2022/2380, an amendment to current EU legislation that will enforce the new rule on chargers, was published in the Official Journal of the EU, setting a deadline by which all phone manufacturers will have to comply with the new rules.

Article 2 of the published directive requires EU member states to adopt and publish laws that comply with Directive 2022/2380 by December 28, 2023. The laws will enter into force one year later, on December 28, 2024. As previously recalled, the deadline was set for the fall of 2024.

Members of the European Parliament and EU member states already voted to introduce USB-C charging ports in October. The regulation only applies to mobile devices, which means products like the Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck models will also be included. On the other hand, laptops won’t have to adapt to the legislation until April 28, 2026.

It also means that the iPhone will have USB-C, as Apple confirmed last October. Obviously, the company isn’t at all happy with the decision.
