The Apple AirPods earphones are a handy device, so people use them whenever and wherever regardless of the circumstances. This means that the chance of getting moisture on the earphones is quite high. Since its release, the AirPods wireless earphones have become one of Apple’s most popular devices.

Many wireless earphones manufacturers add moisture-resistant material to the body of their devices. More often than not, this moisture protection doesn’t prevent water from entering the body if you happen to drown your earphones. But that doesn’t mean that your earphones will fail if you walk around in the rain or accidentally get a small amount of moisture on them.

In this article, you will read about whether your AirPods are afraid of water, and what to do if you accidentally drown them. You will also find out whether you can put your earphones in the rice to soak up the moisture.

Are AirPods afraid of water

Apple has not officially announced the water resistance of its AirPods wireless earphones, but users did the test themselves, and the result was positive. They decided to wash the earphones and the case in the washing machine. They simulated the situation when the user forgot to take the AirPods out of his pocket. In half an hour of washing, the earphones fell out of the case and were washed separately, then they were submerged in water for 12 inches. Surprisingly, the earphones continued to work as before, without any interference.

Of course, this doesn’t give a 100% guarantee that you can swim with them or constantly submerge them in water, but you can be more or less sure that sweat or average rain won’t put the AirPods out of function.

What to do if your AirPods get wet

Even after a positive test result, don’t leave wet earphones unattended with complete confidence. In any case, they should be dried.

So, if you want to dry your AirPods, you can do it in two ways. The first way is just simple drying. If you get caught in heavy rain or drop AirPods in water, you should remove the earphones from their case, wipe them dry with a cloth or tissue, and leave them to dry on a towel. To be sure, you can put the earphones in rice overnight. But you have to be aware that this is no more effective than air drying. Also, pieces of rice can get stuck in the small holes and ports of your AirPods. Some scientists also claim that rice can increase the rate of corrosion inside your AirPods.

Special way to dry AirPods

The second way is special drying. Simple drying removes moisture from the outside, but large amounts of water remain inside the earbuds. The Apple Watch Series 2 and higher has a special technology that alerts you if water has entered the watch’s speakers. Upon notification, you need to turn the Digital Crown wheel and the watch will play a low-pitched sound that pushes the water out of the Apple Watch. Based on this technology, one developer created a special Water Eject command for Siri. This command is available for the iPhone, but if earphones are connected to it, the sound will play on them. To use this feature, you need to install the “Commands” app on your iPhone and download Water Eject. Siri will then respond to the phrase you say and eject water from the speaker.
