If you’ve been using the Pixel 4 for the past three years and don’t plan to replace it, you’ll have to get used to the lack of OS updates. According to Android Police, Google has released the latest guaranteed software updates for the Pixel 4 and 4 XL. They include the usual set of minor bug fixes and security patches, but it would be strange to expect anything more.
Some models in the Pixel 4 family will still receive regular versions and security updates. The Pixel 4a until August 2023, and the 4a 5G until November of that year. You can rest easy if you own a Pixel 6. This line of devices is the first in Google to receive five promised years of security updates, so it should not lose its position until the fall of 2026.
Regardless, the Pixel 4 won’t immediately become obsolete. Updates for Google Play services and apps will continue to be released and keep the Android flagship running for a long time. In turn, Google may release urgent fixes for significant security flaws. Still, you should consider a new smartphone model if you want to be constantly up-to-date.
