The Nest Thermostat is a self-learning Wi-Fi-enabled thermostat that optimizes the heating and cooling of homes and businesses to conserve energy. This device is highly appreciated because it saves money on energy consumption and doesn’t force the owner to constantly adjust the temperature manually.

By the way, the Nest Thermostat lets you adjust your home’s temperature directly from your smartphone, but if you don’t want other people to mess around with it, here’s how to lock your Nest Thermostat with a passcode.

The Nest Thermostat is often used not only in homes where there are kids but also in warehouses, where the temperature can be very crucial to store any products. Therefore, it is not surprising that such a system requires at least a minimum safety features. Fortunately, you can set a PIN code for this device and not worry that someone can accidentally or intentionally change the mode.

How to add a PIN from the Nest Thermostat

To set the PIN code for the Nest Thermostat, follow the instructions:

  • For setting up a passcode right from the Nest Thermostat itself, you can start it by pushing on the unit to bring up the home screen main menu and select Settings
  • Then scroll to the right and select Lock
  • Select Lock when it asks you if you want to lock your thermostat
  • Enter in a four-digit PIN by spinning the wheel and then pushing on the unit to go to the next digit
  • Enter the PIN in one more time
  • There is also a feature that you can adjust the minimum temperature that you’ll allow other people to change it to without needing to enter in the PIN
  • Moreover, youneed to set a maximum temperature. There is an option to make this a range, or use the same number for minimum and maximum temperature to prevent any adjustment at all
  • Select Done

Your thermostat is now locked and you can see this on the display as an icon with a padlock. Even if someone wants to change the temperature or accidentally bump the device, you will need to enter a password and you can not just access it except for those who know the password.

How to add a PIN from your smartphone

You can also lock your Nest Thermostat right from your smartphone through the Nest app. In order to do so, follow these steps:

  • Open up the app and select your Nest Thermostat on the home page
  • Tap on the settings gear icon in the top-right corner of the screen
  • Select Lock
  • Type in a four-digit PIN
  • Enter the PIN in again
  • Using the two slider knobs, adjust the minimum and maximum temperatures. Unfortunately, in the app the minimum range is four degrees, so you can’t make them the same number and completely prevent someone from adjusting the temperature like you can on the Nest itself
  • After that, tap on Lock at the bottom

Your Nest Thermostat will now be locked, and in the settings menu, you will see that the app will now show a blue Unlock button. By clicking on it you will unlock the thermostat and remove the passcode protection.

While you will have to enter in the passcode if you want to change anything on the thermostat itself, you won’t need to do this in the Nest app, and it will be like the thermostat isn’t even locked, which is a nice convenience.

And that’s pretty much all you need to know about setting up a PIN code on your Nest Thermostat.
