Sleeper PC explained

If you are going to build your own PC, you might have come across the term Sleeper PC. This is a special kind of PC that has a simple design so that people do not always realize that it is a powerful PC.

However, before you build such a PC I would advise you to think twice. The fact is that it has a few disadvantages that you need to be aware of. Also, such a PC will not always be useful for you, I would say that it is rather an interesting gadget for your collection than a really useful thing.

What is Sleeper PC

The term Sleep PC came more from the world of cars. They call cars that look very ordinary but have very powerful stuff under the hood. Such cars usually have the body of the most ordinary cars, but they can match the speed of racing models.

It is the same in the case of your sleeping PC. At first glance it looks like an ordinary office PC. Often the cases chosen for them are from old PCs from the early 2000 or even earlier. Also, such a PC can be in the case of an old console or whatever. In fact, they are powerful computers that usually have some of the most powerful and high-performance components.

The pluses of such a PC are the cheapness of the case and the inconspicuousness. However many advise not to collect such a PC as the first project because his assembly you need to pay attention to many details which will be not so important for a normal PC in a standard or gaming box.

Why you might need a sleeper PC

The reasons why you may need a sleeping PC can be different, but I would highlight 2 main reasons in my opinion. It is to hide your PC from others and to have the unusual machine which you have invented and made yourself with your own hands.

You may need a sleeper PC to hide the real potential of your computer. The fact that it can be useful to you in the office or, for example, during the study. So you can hide your gaming PC from the eyes of your boss and can play in your spare time.

The same sleeping PC can be a very interesting project for those who want to build their own unusual computer. The point is that when building such a computer you should take into account such moments as overheating and the fact that to put there all the necessary components. To assemble such a PC can be quite interesting. You can also make it unusual, for example, to add a backlight or some unusual art.

What are the disadvantages of building a sleeper PC

Among the main disadvantages of sleeper PCs are overheating and outdated enclosures. The fact is that old cases are not adapted to modern hardware. They usually have poor heat transfer and poor airflow. Because of this, you run the risk of overheating your PC.

I would for instance tell you not to overclock your seleeper PC or overload it unnecessarily to avoid damaging it. The size of the components can also be a problem. This is especially true for graphics cards. Many modern graphics cards take up quite a lot of space and they can easily not fit into your simple case.

You may also have problems with cable management. The fact is those old computers were much simpler and didn’t have a lot of pluggable devices such as HDD or SSD. So having a few extra wires can also be a problem when building such a computer.

What other unusual PCs can you build

If your goal is to build yourself an unusual PC and you are tired of the same type of gaming enclosures, then there are still a few different custom computer options that you can consider.

For example, you can build yourself a mini PC. This is an interesting experience because your goal is to make the PC as small as possible and leave the maximum performance behind. You can also hide such a PC in a secluded place and also hide it from prying eyes.

Another idea for building a hidden PC is to make the PC built into the wall or furniture. Such an idea is rather complicated and expensive, but the result is sure to please you and surprise all your friends and guests.
