While Elden Ring was this year’s breakout game, sold millions of copies, and was named Game of the Year by The Game Awards, it was overtaken by 2015, which usurped its position as the highest-rated open-world RPG. More specifically, the 2015 game received an update for next-gen consoles.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt received a patch for modern consoles. Now Xbox Series X and PS5 owners see that The Witcher’s world looks much more visually impressive. It’s not just a graphical update. CD Projekt has improved performance along with several tweaks, updates, and content additions. All of this means that the current-gen version of the game has received high reviews across the board.
The PlayStation 5 version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt overtook Elden Ring in the ratings. On the review aggregation website Metacritic, the average score of professional critics reached 97. The work CDPR put into the game has paid off, as The Witcher 3 now overtakes Elden Ring, which still holds a high score of 96.
