What are the similarities and differences between desktop and laptop

Today’s world is as digital as possible. Everyone has a smartphone and a computer. People use them for a wide variety of tasks. You need to quickly record a lecture at the university or make a 3D project for work. Maybe you need to hold an online conference at work or you want to spend an evening playing your favorite video game. For all these tasks and many others, your computer is the right choice. There are two most common forms of computer factors desktop and laptop computers. What do they have in common, and what are the differences?

What are the the laptop and desktop

In general, they are different computer form factors. A desktop is usually in the form of a system box that houses all of your equipment, such as the graphics card, processor, memory, and so on. There are also monoblocks. These are also desktops, but where all the hardware is built into the monitor. Regarding laptops are computers which are made in a kind of “case” where the screen is attached to the keyboard and it can be folded or unfolded. It is not tied to the network and can be carried wherever you want.

What are the similarities between desktop and laptop

When it comes to generalities between laptops and desktops, there are quite a few. They both use the same operating system. They have similar memory cards built into them. They are essentially the same computers and their operating principles are almost identical. You can do the same tasks on them and they are both good for gaming or workflows, depending on power. In terms of power and stuffing, they also differ mainly in the video card, since it takes up a lot of space and it’s just not possible to put a desktop version of the video card into a laptop. Special mobile versions of video cards were developed for them.

What are the differences between desktop and laptop

There are a lot more differences between these devices. They are listed below:

  • To fully work with the desktop you need a side device, such as a monitor, keyboard and mouse, while the laptop is fully equipped, you can just take it and use it.
  • Desktops usually take up a lot of space and are really heavy because of the size of their casings and internals, and you always need to bring a monitor with you. And laptops weigh very little, you can easily take it with you wherever you go. It’s not going to be in your way. You can simply put it in your bag or backpack.
  • You can put a lot of different hard disks or SSD in desktops, we can expand the number of slots for them, and with laptops you always have a limited number of slots
  • Desktops are not portable, you can’t take them with you to a cafe because you need a stable power supply and they take a lot of space. whereas a laptop can run on its internal battery and you don’t need a device to use it.
  • Talking about power, if you have a desktop and the power goes out you immediately lose all your programs and progress in them. In the case of a laptop you just switch to battery power and keep on doing whatever you’re doing.
  • The desktops have more powerful processors and graphics cards as well as much better cooling because of their size and the possibility to insert additional fans. Laptops use mobile versions of the stuffing. They are not as powerful and can give you limited capabilities in many programs or games.
  • With Desktops you can buy a new keyboard or monitor as you like or you can just upgrade what you have, with laptops you always have to use the hardware which is already built in.
  • Desktop has many more ports, including all sorts of connectors for alternative types of devices such as DVI or display ports.
  • You can change the contents of the desktop, you can upgrade it or change it completely and you can also improve the desktop by increasing the amount of RAM for example. In the case of laptops then in almost all versions of mobile computers it is not possible to change anything from the memory card.
  • Fixing desktops is much easier and cheaper than fixing laptops. Many laptops are built very complicated and there are problems finding a technician who can disassemble your laptop without breaking anything in it.
