What does TV 14 mean on Netflix explained

TV is developing at a very rapid pace and content is becoming newer and newer every day, so it is difficult for parents to keep track of what movie or cartoon their child is watching. It happens that a cartoon may seem at first glance to be a common children’s project, but in the end, it mentions topics that are not for children at all. In this article, I will tell you what TV ratings are and how to filter the information on Netflix.

What are TV ratings

With such varied content that has been broadcast on TV for decades, a special rating system was created, which allowed those in the house to understand the message of a particular movie, show, or series. These ratings, called the TV Parental Guidelines were designed to be
easily recognizable and simple to use.

In general, these guidelines are used everywhere and can be seen on a TV show or movie’s details page. Sometimes when first playing a title, the rating will appear briefly in the top corner of your screen. The location of this information may vary by device. They do not apply only to sports shows and news.

Is there any other TV ratings

In order to understand abbreviations and infographics while watching a movie or TV series, it is worth understanding first what each of them represents and which rating is responsible for what. The icons are quite simple and easy to decipher. Basically, they look the same and only the letters and numbers are different

  • TV Y – All Children. Programs with this rating were specially created for children from 2-6 years old, that is, even a very small child can easily watch programs with this rating. You can not worry about the safety of young viewers
  • TV Y7 – Directed to Older Children. Such programs are still quite harmless, but the fact is that some topics may be simply incomprehensible to children under 7 years old, and therefore the target audience of these programs is slightly older children. There may be comedic violence. Therefore, parents may wish to consider the suitability of this program for their very young children
  • TV Y7 FV – Directed to Older Children – Fantasy Violence. For those programs where fantasy violence may be more intense or more combative than other programs in this category, such programs will be designated TV-Y7-FV
  • TV G – General Audience. This type of program can be considered as for audience of all ages. They may not be intended for children, though they are designed to be watched by everyone. That’s why you won’t find violent themes, stong language or sexual themes
  • TV PG -Parental Guidance Suggested. This abbreviation means that a particular show or movie has a limited number of topics of a certain type and can only be watched when accompanied by a parent
  • TV 14 – Parents Strongly Cautioned. And this type of rating means that the content in the show or movie may be inappropriate for children under the age of 14, or can only be watched by children under strict parental supervision, as there is violence, intense sexual situations or intensely suggestive dialogue
  • R – Restricted. May be inappropriate for ages 17 and under
  • TV MA – Mature Audience Only. This rating defines the film as not intended for anyone under the age of 17, as it may contain one or more of the following: crude indecent language, explicit sexual activity, or graphic violence
  • NC-17 – Inappropriate for ages 17 and under

In addition, there may be some of these letters that can contain more info and warnings of topics included in the program:

D – suggestive dialogue (usually means talks about sex)
L – coarse or crude language
S – sexual situations
V – violence
FV – fantasy violence (children’s programming only)

To set a maturity rating level for a profile, go to Profile and Parental Controls, choose a profile, and select Viewing Restrictions.

Profiles with a set maturity level will only show titles that fit the chosen maturity rating level. You can also block specific shows and movies from individual profiles.

And that is all info about TV ratings and what stands for these letters and numbers.
