What is the difference between passive and active stretching?

Stretching is a set of methods and techniques for stretching the muscles and connective tissue formations of the musculoskeletal system. Stretching is one of the most underrated forms of fitness because many people think that this is nothing more than a simple workout.

Stretching helps to increase flexibility, improve circulation in the muscles and joints, and increase energy levels. The most popular are active and passive stretching. The difference between the two is your involvement. However, along with that, there are five other types.

What is passive stretching?

Passive stretching is a form of stretching ideal for performing with a partner. It’s essential that the body remains completely passive and that all actions be performed with the application of external force. This can be as amplifiers or help from a partner. For this reason, passive stretching is otherwise called relaxed stretching.

More often than not, a trainer will help you develop your thoughts and perform the exercises during passive stretching. Studies have shown that passive stretching is ideal for muscle recovery after injuries. The reason for doing so is that the activities are done gradually, without sudden movements. It also requires some time for each position.

A well-known example of passive stretching is the splits after acting, for example, spreading the legs as wide as possible. Also, by letting the weight of your body rest on them, a person can perform stretching with the help of his body.

What is active stretching?

Active stretching implies, accordingly, your activity. Active stretching is widely used in yoga classes. Martial artists and ballet dancers also use it intensively. Active stretching techniques help improve performance in most sports.

The effect of active stretching is based on a physiological reaction called reciprocal inhibition. It works so that one muscle group is held in a tense position for an extended period. While the opposite muscle groups don’t need to remain tight, they relax and stretch.

What are the positive effects of stretching?

Stretching, as well as other essential sports, will improve your overall condition. However, many fundamental aspects should be mentioned:

  • Relieving stress and muscle tension.
  • Indirect weight loss benefits. Stretching workouts don’t require as much physical exertion as cardio workouts. However, at the same time, stretching relieves stress, so people don’t eat out of focus.
  • It improved posture and symmetry.
  • It relieves stress and muscle tension.
  • Professional adaptation. Stretching helps maximize performance in sports, dance, and other physical activities.

In addition to this list, it’s worth mentioning that rehabilitation therapists practice stretching with their patients. Because after complex injuries or surgeries, it’s time to return to physical activity. Doctors practice passive stretching with their patients to get them back in shape and recover from their illnesses.
