How to fix the green screen on Android

Android-based smartphones come in many forms. There are expensive and powerful flagships, which are designed for constant use and replace completely cameras, movie cameras, TVs, and even PCs or laptops. And there are cheap smartphones that are designed only for surfing the Internet, messengers, and calls. However, all these smartphones of different brands and models have one thing in common: hardware malfunctions.

One of the common hardware problems in Android smartphones is the problem with the green screen. In fact, there are many reasons why it can occur. Besides, it mightn’t even be related to the hardware. Sometimes the problem is in the software. Well, let’s take a closer look at what causes the green screen on Android smartphones and how to fix it.

How does the screen turn green on Android?

Most of the problems faced by users of smartphones, regardless of their manufacturer, are software-related. Malfunctions in cloud services, low battery life, interruptions in Wi-Fi or LTE – all these are the consequence of flaws in the updates that Android or system apps receive. Therefore, by and large, there’s nothing wrong with them, because almost everything is fixable. However, there are also problems that damage the device on a physical level. Such as in the case of green screens.

Everything would be fine if the problem didn’t have a progressive nature. At first, just green spots appear on the screen. Most often they’re located chaotically in different places of the matrix, but this isn’t a crucial point.

More importantly, over time, these spots – initially small – begin to expand, until they cover the entire working area of the display. As a result, the image disappears, instead of which appears a white or completely green screen, but the sensitivity of the touchscreen isn’t lost, although it makes little sense.

Initially, the problem with the green screen may seem similar even to the “blue screen” in Windows. However, don’t worry too much. Let’s figure out how to fix it.

How to repair the green screen on an Android device

Obviously, the appearance of green on the screen is pure of a hardware nature. Despite the fact that it can appear as a result of installing a defective software update, you can’t fix it with the same update. This is indicated by the experience of service centers, which are engaged in solving such problems.

The only way to eliminate the green screen is to replace the display. If the device is still under warranty, you can apply to a service center, and most likely the replacement will be performed free of charge. However, if the warranty has expired, it’s likely that you will have to pay for the replacement yourself.

In general, turning green is a problem unique to AMOLED screens. It can occur for a variety of reasons, but in the vast majority of cases, the appearance of green lines on the display, regardless of their thickness and number, is considered a defect. Sometimes it can also be due to burnout of the display.

That’s why nobody is able to eliminate them with improvised means. Of course, some people report successful attempts to remove green stripes from the screen by rolling back the firmware or rebooting (as with the flickering screen in Samsung smartphones, for example), but most users fail to do so.

How to reboot an Android device

If you don’t give up hope, you can still try restarting your Android mobile device and see what happens. Here’s how you can do it:

  • First of all, press and hold down the “Power” button for ten seconds.
  • Then your device should shut down.
  • Wait for 10 minutes before turning it back on again to allow it to shut down completely.
  • Then turn your device back on.

It’s important to note that depending on the model, Android devices respond differently to a pressed “Power” button. For example, if you press the Power button for 10 seconds on a Xiaomi smartphone, the device will reboot immediately. Furthermore, rebooting your Android device is helping more often when your Android device is stuck on the startup screen. However, in the case of a green screen, it can help too.

How to hard reset an Android device

If you haven’t been able to fix the green screen problem after simply rebooting your Android smartphone, you can try hard resetting it. If you want to do so, you have to follow these steps:

  • Press and hold the “Power” button for 30 seconds.
  • Your device will restart.
  • Release the “Power” button when you see the manufacturer’s logo.
  • Wait until the device reboots completely.

In general, the procedure of a hard reset of the smartphone is almost the same on all mobile devices. In the same way, you can hard reset iPhone 13, for example.

What is an AMOLED display?

The term AMOLED stands for Active Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode. This technology was developed by the South Korean company Samsung. It applies it in almost every product, as well as collaborating with several other brands in the supply of high-tech AMOLED screens. This type of display works with organic semiconductor technology. As they pass a current through them, they emit light.

The pixel response on an LED matrix is much higher than on IPS screens which are also very often compared to the ADS displays. AMOLED displays can display images dynamically. The high frame rate allows you to achieve a smooth picture. This characteristic offers advantages for gaming and VR interaction.

Pixels and subpixels of the AMOLED matrix emit light autonomously. The lighter the color on the screen – the brighter its pixels, so during the display of dark colors, such screens are energy efficient.

Since AMOLED matrices have no layer for special backlighting of liquid crystals, such displays are noticeably thinner. This allows you to achieve a minimum size smartphone, but, at the same time, keep its reliability and economical battery consumption.

Reflecting black, pixels do not glow, and during the display of mixed colors can show increased brightness. Due to this, AMOLED screens have better contrast and black depth.

What is an IPS screen?

The use of IPS (In-Plane Switching) technology involves the creation of matrices on so-called liquid crystals. The image is formed by passing polarized light through a color filter. Current display brightness is controlled by horizontal and vertical filters, which operate on every pixel, regardless of its activity at any given time.

IPS matrices have the broadest color gamut. Users are able to see the real colors of objects on the screens. In addition, the picture isn’t distorted much when viewed from different angles. The liquid crystals used in IPS screens aren’t subject to the effects of aging, and their service life is quite long. At the same time, the display doesn’t lose the original ability to transmit natural colors.

Choosing a smartphone, taking into account the characteristics of its display, you should be guided by your own needs. It’s also important to note that most modern smartphones have the above disadvantages of matrices, as a rule, aren’t too pronounced. Of course, the future belongs to AMOLED screens, because they’re promoted by the leading companies in the most expensive and prestigious smartphones.

Nevertheless, not one type of screen does not save the smartphone from some hardware problems that may appear after improper use of the device. Therefore, to prevent your Android screen from turning purple or green, you should treat your smartphone carefully and not drop it unnecessarily.
